Aaron Lewis: our latest team member

It’s official, Aaron Lewis is coming on board the Blue Tree Media train to help improve Maritime Rideshare. Aaron is an Island-bred, free-range, 100% pure systems designer who just did his thesis on P2P car-sharing. We’re glad to have Aaron on-board, and can’t wait to see how far we take ridesharing in the Maritimes (and beyond?).

GOInstant Hackathon

We spent the day at the GoInstant Hackathon this past saturday. It was great! You might be asking yourself “what the hack is a hackathon?”. Well, it’s when a bunch of people get together and hack together some code to solve a problem, learn new things, and meet new people. It’s all based around the coding though.

The GoInstant team is full of experts in real-time web technologies (hence their co-browsing software), and the focus of Saturday was Node.js. Node is perfect for interacting through a website in real-time with other people (sometimes MANY other people).

Our project for the day was the recreation of an old game called Snakes. But our twist was that we wanted people to be able to play together, online, in real-time…Like, MANY people playing together simultaneously.

We didn’t finish to the point we were hoping to, but it was a great day, we learned a lot and met some super cool people.

New addition to the team: Mikey Wasnidge

We’re pleased to have Mikey Wasnidge on the Blue Tree Media team. Mikey is just with us for the summer as he’s back to UPEI in September. Assuming he makes it out of UPEI alive, we’ll have him back next year. Mikey is a great photographer (see his work here) and has a great mind for business & marketing. Best of all though, he has a great attitude, comes to work earlier and stays late! Super glad to have him on the team.

Website Launch – The Pilot House

We’re happy to announce the launch of the new website for The Pilot House. Judy, Richard and the gang at The Pilot House were a pleasure to work with; they offered great insight into their business and helped direct us to what you see now for the final version of the site. We initially presented them with two designs, one was a more typical website design where all the content was in boxes and the other was a more modern and free layout where the content was overlaid on big photos of their restaurant. We were really happy when they chose the modern version; this shows that they’re forward thinking and have a strong vision for their restaurant.

We also built a separate mobile site, so when guests browse their site with a smartphone they get a website that’s fast, readable and optimized for their phone. We got to use jQuery mobile and a lot of custom code for this.

One thing we set out to do with this project was build the best restaurant website in our region. We wanted something that looked amazing, worked great, and we could all be really proud of. We’re going to use this approach for every project from now on. If we’re not going to design and build something that’s the best then we’re not going to waste our time doing it.

Overall this was a really fun project and we’re all really happy with the outcome.

Blue Tree Media has grown into a new website! Over the course of the past couple of years we found it difficult to squeeze in the time needed to design our own website when our clients seem to always seem to need more work done. I guess the expression “The cobbler’s children have no shoes” is true in today’s world of web design and programming.

Well, we’re finally happy with our new website and plan to build upon in over the course of the next couple of months. Feel free to send any suggestions for improvement our way.
